Seasonal Clerkship Program
As a seasonal clerk at Deacons in Melbourne, your clerkship will be a challenging, rewarding and enjoyable experience. You will get to know our partners and staff and experience our culture of open communication and teamwork first hand, whilst gaining an appreciation of how we operate.
Our seasonal clerkship program is designed to provide you with a mix of formal training and on-the-job training in a designated practice area, to assist you in developing your knowledge and skills. The training that you will be exposed to will include formal induction and training on our systems and processes, firm wide CLE training, legal skills training and mentoring from those partners and lawyers you will work closely with in your practice area. We aim to provide you with enough training to enable you to get through your clerkship without utilising too much of the time you will spend in your practice area.
Our program consists of three 3-4 week clerkships (Winter, Pre Christmas and Post Christmas), where you will be allocated to one business unit to maximise your experience at Deacons. You will be allocated main contacts within your business unit, who will assist you in settling into the firm and will facilitate your workflow during your clerkship.
Another aspect of your clerkship will be the social activities that you can participate in. As a seasonal clerk at Deacons, you will be involved in firm specific activities including cocktail parties, lunches, dinners, sporting events and various other social activities.

Articled Clerkship Program
In Melbourne, our articled clerkship program runs for a 12 month period and consists of four rotations. The rotations will provide you with exposure to a variety of practice areas whilst enabling a sufficient period of time to become involved in client matters and the business unit generally. This experience will ensure that when it comes time to move into an area of law in which you wish to practice, you'll be able to identify with confidence the area that best suits your particular talents and career goals.
During your clerkship year, you will also experience:
- A wide variety of both litigious and non-litigious work.
- The opportunity to work directly with partners and senior lawyers who will guide and instruct you.
- Responsibility for various assignments and matters.
- Well-rounded practical and formal training.
We will provide you with a Buddy, a Business Unit Co-ordinator, a Supervising Partner and a Principal to assist you during your clerkship. In conjunction with learning through involvement in client matters, a comprehensive training program is run both internally and also externally through College of Law, providing Deacons' graduates with a well-rounded skill set to embark upon their career as a solicitor.
Our main intention is to develop your knowledge and skills to provide a strong foundation for your future career.
Feedback
As an Articled Clerk, you will receive ongoing feedback during the course of your rotations, as well as participating in a formal feedback review process after each rotation. This provides you with the opportunity to experience ongoing communication between yourself and the partners and ensures that you will maximise your learning experience.
