Summer Clerkship Program

As a summer clerk at Deacons, your clerkship will be a challenging, rewarding and enjoyable experience. You will get to know our partners and staff and experience our culture of open communication and teamwork first hand, whilst gaining an appreciation of how we operate.

Not only is our summer clerkship program designed to ensure that you receive well-rounded practical training by working with a number of practice areas, it also includes formal training to further develop your knowledge and skills. The training that you will be exposed to include formal induction and training on internal systems and processes, firm wide CLE attendance and participation, legal skills training and mentoring.

The program runs for a 10 to 12 week period over December, January & February and rather than have formal rotations, you will be allocated a primary and secondary business unit. You will often receive work from other practice groups within our firm also, to widen your breadth of experience.

Another significant aspect of the clerkship is the social activities that you will be engaged in. As a summer clerk at Deacons you will be involved in inter-firm and Deacons specific activities including cocktail parties, lunches, dinners, sporting events, trivia nights and other various social activities.

Graduate Program

In the Sydney Office, our graduate program runs for an 18-month period and consists of three rotations. The rotations allow you to experience a wide variety of legal work and when it comes time to move into an area of law in which you wish to practice, you'll be able to identify with confidence the area that best suits your particular talents and career goals.

You will also experience, amongst other things:

  • A wide variety of both litigious and non-litigious work
  • The opportunity to work directly with partners and senior lawyers who will guide and instruct you
  • Responsibility for various assignments and matters
  • Well-rounded practical and formal training

The main intention is to develop your knowledge and skills to provide a strong foundation for your future career. All our Graduates are involved in a regular feedback process. This provides an opportunity for ongoing communication between partners and staff and ensures our graduates maximise their learning experience.
